Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, more popularly known as simply Ship or SU, is a public university in Shippensburg, a borough in Cumberland and Franklin counties, in the Cumberland Valley, with a population estimated at a number of more than 5 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Shippensburg University was established in 1871 and it is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. It received official approval by the state in February, 1873, and in the same year, admitted its first class of 217 students, today, its enrollment being approximated at a number of more than 7000.
The university currently offers its students 52 undergraduate, 8 pre-professional and 17 graduate programs, through 5 academic divisions: Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Services, John L. Grove College of Business, School of Academic Programs and Services, and teh School of Graduate Studies.
SU's athletic teams are known as the Raiders, which have as their mascot Big Red. They compete in NCAA Division II's PSAC in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, cross country, swimming, lacrosse, volleyball, field hockey and softball.
